Rhapsody

The sweet-natured coming-of-age movie may be set in the 1980s, but it combines earlier classics by the likes of Lou Reed and Big Star with modern rock cuts from Bowie, the Cure, Husker Du and the Replacements. In case you think the '80s were too tasteful and restrained, there are even a couple of cringe-worthy, hair-sprayed numbers by the Outfield and Falco (the German language version of "Rock Me Amadeus," of course). "Don't Change" may be INXS' single best song, while Crowded House's bittersweet "Don't Dream It's Over" captures the complex themes and overall mood of the movie. Want more? Yo La Tengo wrote the score.
