Almanac Singers

About

Extremely influential folk group set the standard for socially conscious music. Formed by Woody Guthrie, his protégé Pete Seeger, Lee Hayes and Millard Lampbell and produced by the legendary Alan Lomax, the group played a mixture of old folk standards and union songs, driven by Seeger's banjo and Guthrie's harmonica. They were together for only a short time as Almanac Singers, but Seeger and Hayes went on to hook up with Ronnie Gilbert and Fred Hellerman to form the Weavers. The Weavers were more popular than Almanac Singers, and less overtly political, but their career still suffered in the 1950s due to anti-communist hysteria.
