More Chicago than a meatball sandwich, Andrew Bird's 10th long player mirrors much of the Windy City's indie rock scene, with quirky instrumentation, scholarly lyrics, and the nerve to pontificate about chasms, schisms and aneurysms (all in the same sentence). His first album for Fat Possum reveals that the multi-instrumentalist has truly come into his own as a lyricist, especially on "Darkmatter," an intense introspection recalling the time in his youth when action figures served as a gateway toy to Milton Bradley's "Operation," which opened up the door of his morbid fascinations.
