Annie Lennox

The fourth solo LP from Lennox in 15 years, Songs is much less politically acrid than the title might suggest, collecting mid-tempo rockers with poised pronouncements like "Love Is Blind." "Womankind" and "Sing" both find Lennox crooning to inspire her "sisters," but the quickened pace and blue-eyed-soul hook of "Ghost In My Machine" makes it the most uplifting.

The title is overstated, but Songs of Mass Destruction does layer welcome muscle beneath
the porcelain-smooth surface of Annie Lennox's voice. The result is an album that captures
the range of her styles, from the rhythmically charged pop of her Eurythmics days to the
haunted, longing ballads of her solo career. If the two approaches don't always cohere,
