Apollo Sunshine

About

Boston neo-psychedelic band Apollo Sunshine sounds just like what it is -- the brain child of three Berklee College of Music students (vocalist/bassist/keyboardist Jesse Gallagher, guitarist/vocalist Sam Cohen, drummer/percussionist Jeremy Black) grown robust and vigorous on a well-rounded diet of jazz, Beck and the Flaming Lips. After releasing their 2003 debut Katonah on spinART, the band went on to earn accolades from the likes of the New York Times, Rolling Stone and Pitchfork, and opened for a diverse range of luminary headliners including Sonic Youth, Built to Spill, the Roots and My Morning Jacket. Apollo Sunshine's sound verges alternately on jingly indie pop, twangy alt-rock, surf-tastic retro grooves and something that can only be described as an obliterating, overwhelming cacophony of noise, as on Katonah's "Happening," a poignantly riotous retelling of the 9/11 tragedy.
