Rhapsody

France is full of quadruple-threat performer/songwriter/arranger/producers like Serge Gainsbourg, Benjamin Biolay, Katerine Philippe and Art Mengo. A solo star, Mengo took a long sabbatical and went back to supporting other artists. The lovely La Vie de Chateau is his 2003 return to the spotlight. Brimming with a renewed sense of purpose, Mengo's music almost feels like downtempo, but his songs are warm, sensual and non-electronic. Very continental, with the pull of Spain (Mengo's ancestral home) flickering in and out. This beach-house album has real cultural crossover potential.
