If Robert Johnson sounds like he sold his soul to the Devil, Blind Lemon Jefferson sounds like he might actually be the Devil. "I don't feel welcome/I don't care where I go," from "Stocking Feet Blues" says it all. Blind Lemon was clearly a conflicted man. His wailing vocal, wiry guitar playing and lost man subtext are foundations of both blues and rock aesthetics.
