Although this release is subtitled "24 Smooth Jazz Classics," it also showcases James' funky crossover work from the early 1970s (much of the best stuff here) and ends with synth-heavy keyboard instrumentals from '83. Add in his acoustic piano work and his avant-garde freakouts and you'd have a complete portrait of a jazz artist who is one part Lou Reed and one part Leo Sayer.
