Brett Dennen's androgynous voice sounds like a hybrid of Dave Matthews and Tracy Chapman, while the dialogue of his narratives touches on the troubled times of the George W. Bush administration. More melancholically musing than preachy, his lyrics require a close listen to reveal that he's ultimately a liberal folk rocker, which is smart on so many levels, if only to assure that he doesn't get beat up backstage while touring the red states.
