Cardinal is the brainchild of Richard Davies (an Australian-born artist with a penchant for putting piano in pop songs) and orchestral pop maven Eric Matthews. Though the duo only put out one album (in 1994), Cardinal are widely regarded as a seminal pop band, and both artists have gone on to solo careers. These kindly, considerate tunes pack an old-world grace similar to what the Beatles achieved.
