Chris Brokaw was the coolest guy in my high school. He was hanging out with Cheetah Chrome at Max's Kansas City while the rest of us were falling asleep in the middle of Saturday Night Live. These days he's a necromancer, bringing tired old blues-based rock to life again. Call Come whatever you want -- blues-punk, post-noise, avant-thrash -- the music they make is powerful, soaked with emotion and old. To steal a lyric from Curt Kirkwood, Come play with "ancient blocks of sound." If Brokaw can't make you feel with the washes of feedback and ringing tones his guitar produces, then vocalist Thalia Zedek's groans and wails just might make you glad you don't have a heart to crush.
