1950s West Coast jazz often didn't fit the negative stereotypes (too white, too laidback) that have come to surround it. This session led by Curtis Counce shows that the bassist and his top notch L.A. crew (Harold Land, Jack Sheldon, and Carl Perkins) excelled at lean, mean hard bop. There's even a cool-toned ballad to prove that not all stereotypes are bad.
