Dave Matthews Band

Recorded live in 2001 in Boulder, the putative epicenter of jam rock, the Dave Matthews Band churn through two discs of early material, with "Ants Marching" "Crash Into Me" and "Everyday" all figuring largely in the set. Matthews' preferred backing singers, the Lovely Ladies, turn up on half a dozen songs, but Matthews' laid-back personality and overall master-of-ceremonies aura and the constantly shifting interplay between the band members take center stage. Violinist Boyd Tinsley, in particular, delivers some downright psychedelic moments, most notably during "JTR."

Halfway through the ten-minute version of "Bartender" -- one of the highlights of this
two-disc live document from summer 2001 -- the Dave Matthews Band settles into a calm,
shimmering groove, and Matthews begins to murmur -- he toys with a line, then discards it,
then reaches up and flutters into his falsetto. The rest of the band members follow, and
