David 'Fathead' Newman

About

David "Fathead" Newman's rich saxophone sound is one of the most reassuring constants in jazz and popular music. Newman came to public prominence during his long stint with Ray Charles, and he went on to a career as a solo star and busy sideman. Along with his Charles band mate, Hank Crawford, Newman touched upon the sounds of the church, the sin shack, and the jazz joint in his Soul Jazz sound. Newman's saxophone also provides fine vocal accompaniment; his playing is featured on many jazz, R&B and pop albums.
