These days just about every indie brat out there is ripping off African pop, from Vampire Weekend to Yeasayer to Gang Gang Dance. But Hera Ma Nono beats them all. Easily. Featuring a mishmash of benga musicians from Kenya and former members of Golden, an underrated indie rock band active in the late '90s, Extra Golden gets all world-funky thanks to an in-the-flesh knowledge of folk music styles their peers only know via expensive CD reissues. We're talking authentic fusion jammers for sure.
