Austin, Texas's native sons and Latin funk sensations Grupo Fantasma have gotten some high-profile love of late -- they were chosen to be a resident band at Prince's Las Vegas nightclub in 2007, and they backed the Purple One in his pre-Super Bowl shows in 2007. Prince's high-profile support aside, the band was already a favorite in Austin, where they formed in 2000 and consistently wowed fans with their high-energy live shows and massive horn section. The band's liberal use of cumbia, salsa, mambo and any other Latin style that takes their fancy makes for an inspired, mongrel sound.
