Il Divo

Even compared to other grandstanding popra beefcakes, Il Divo is an indulgent orgy of New Age flourishes and no-holds-barred baroque revivalism -- classical guitar noodling along to a synth patter, orchestral strings swelling into a volcanic tympanic eruption. Still, the aching melodrama of the singing is what pushes things purple, swapping verses of Italian romantic songs and delivering a come-hither take on pop standards like Leonard Cohen's (more accurately, Jeff Buckley's cover of Leonard Cohen's) "Hallelujah," Abba and even Frankie Goes To Hollywood.
