Based in the San Francisco Bay area, QBA is led by master drummer/percussionist Jesus Diaz. Playing a dynamic and original style of Salsa, they incorporate the funky timba sound of their Cuban dance band contemporaries. Timbales, conga, and percussion are anchored in the funky, fluid yet thumping bass of Rahsaan Fredericks (currently playing with Mickey Hart). Diaz earned his reputation as a meticulously strong drummer playing with Conjunto Cespedes and giving drum clinics with Talking Drums. Graced with the classic rumbero voice of Cuba, his hip, street-sounding Spanish vocals are backed by crucial chorus vocals. Complex breaks and changes bring the element of surprise as the soulful horn arrangements by Wayne Wallace jump in, elevating the already inspired tempo. Irresistible for dance, yet eminently listenable.
