Jewel leaves behind the dance pop of 0304 and the earnest broken-hearted coming-of-age musings of Pieces of You on her sixth studio release, showing the Alaskan chanteuse in a more revealing light. The result is an edgier, more rock version of her autobiography as she leaves childish things behind, bending her malleable, soaring soprano around more adult themes. She still channels Joni Mitchell when she revisits "Satellite," a song she penned at 18, but she's added a Patti Smith-like grit.
