Joey Ramone

About

There were a number of bands tooling around New York's lower East side who helped create the Punk sound, but none so effectively as the Ramones. Combining the infectious rhythms of '60s pop played at twice the original speed, the roaring guitars of Garage rock, and hooky sing-along choruses about Punk rockers named Sheena, and the act of sniffing glue, they created a sound that would revolutionize music and inspire legions of kids to gleefully jump up and down in a bizarre display called "pogoing." For every Punk band that followed -- most notably the Sex Pistols, the Boys and Green Day -- the Ramones trademark three-chord rock 'n' roll would become a musical staple. The song featured here is Ramones vocalist Joey Ramone's barely altered rendition of the Stooges classic anthem "1969." Hey! Ho! Let's Go!
