John Entwistle

About

John Entwistle got his nickname, "The Ox," for the complicated basslines he pulled off to compensate for the Who's lack of a rhythm guitarist. Author of some of rock's most recognizable licks (think of the thunderous intro to "I Can See for Miles"), Entwistle was one of the first bass players to step out of the shadows and assume a prominent position in a rock 'n' roll lineup. A virtuoso of the instrument, Entwistle can play leads, fills, burbling counter-melodies, and even the occasional solo (check out "My Generation" for a refresher). He is also noteworthy for penning some of the Who's quirkiest compositions, like "My Wife" and "Boris the Spider." Though his success as a solo performer has been eclipsed by bandmate Pete Townshend, all of Entwistle's recordings are worth listening to for his workmanlike technique and daft sense of humor.
