King Britt

  • Genre: House
  • Hometown: Philadelphia

About

Philly producer/DJ King Britt is a hard one to pin down. One minute he's touring with coffee-shop rap pioneers Digable Planets, the next he's spinning beside Josh Wink at some of the biggest house clubs in the world. Along with Wink, he's responsible for seminal house track "Tribal Confusion," released under the E-Culture moniker, and also founded the important Ovum Recordings label. But it quickly became apparent in 1998 that Britt wasn't willing to stay in his lane. His solo debut, 1998's When the Funk Hit the Fan, was a tribute to Philly funk legends. The producer pivoted again with the 2003 album Adventures in Lo-Fi, which was a full-on indie hip-hop album. But despite what genre he dabbled in, all of his work is marked by a smooth, jazz-informed undercurrent that summons a credible vision of modern urban cool.
