Before dub and the Black Ark helped turn him into Jamaican music's eccentric-in-chief, Lee Perry was already a commanding figure. This collection of ska and rocksteady tracks recorded for Coxsone Dodd's legendary Studio One label between 1964 and 1966 shows the musician that preceded the madman. Backed by the Skatalites, with the Soulettes (featuring Rita Marley) and the Wailers (Bob Marley, Bunny Wailer and Peter Tosh) as his chorus, Perry bops and skanks through jazzed-up Jamaican takes on American soul and RnB, full of major chords, ruling downbeats and bright outlooks.
