Moby Grape

Moby Grape is often seen as nothing more than a vehicle for Alexander "Skip" Spence. But the band was loaded with seriously talented singer-songwriters. 1969's Truly Fine Citizen isn't a masterpiece, but it does feature great contributions from Peter Lewis and Jerry Miller, who steer the band into hard rocking country-soul territory. Recording in Nashville, the Grape sound like an amped up Buffalo Springfield. In fact, Truly Fine Citizen is much more consistent than most Springfield albums.

In which what should have been America's greatest rock group gasps its last. Quite mediocre, despite a couple of lovely Peter Lewis songs. (Grade - C+)
