Nat King Cole

When My Fair Lady hit Broadway in 1956, Shelly Manne and Andre Previn cut an inventive bop reading of the Lerner & Loewe score. The result was a best seller that kicked off the "jazz does Broadway" fad of the 1950s and '60s. A few years later, with the film version set for release, Nat Cole recorded his own reading of the score. As a whole, it's surprisingly tepid, but there are standouts. Cole does a bossa nova beat on "On the Street Where You Live," swings hard on "Get Me to the Church on Time" and sounds like he's prepping for Broadway on "I Could Have Danced All Night." Nat could do anything.
