REO's biggest album topped Billboard's chart for 15 weeks in 1981, spawning four Top 30 singles. What's generally forgotten is how expert its pop-rock is -- not just the Diddley-beat "Don't Let Him Go" and doo-wop "In Your Letter," both hits, but deep cuts like "Follow My Heart" (garage-slimy mind-body dualism seemingly indebted to the Music Machine), "Tough Guys" (power-pop starting with an Our Gang sample), and "Shakin' It Loose" (frat-dance bubblegum with boogie-woogie ivory). The 2011 remaster adds demo mixes that remind you these Illinois boys started out as heavy rockers.
