Casual listeners would be forgiven for mistaking this LP for a recently excavated 1970s soul classic. Jones's vocals -- soaring and gritty -- recall Aretha Franklin in her prime, while the Dap King's loose funk grooves instantly bring to mind the JB's. The chunky "My Man Is a Mean Man" and torch song "How Long Do I Wait for You" sound hopelessly (and sublimely) archaic.
