Stars

On their second LP, Stars retain their retro synth-pop framework but start letting the guitars inch forward. But the backings are merely icing on the cake -- Stars' specialty has always been instantly catchy indie pop songs that avoid wearing out their welcome. Instead, they grow richer with each airing. Major labels would love to get ahold of tunes as strong as "Elevator Love Song" and "Romantic Comedy." The expansive, multi-part "Don't Be Afraid to Sing" points the way to the rich, anthemic sound of Set Yourself On Fire, Stars' masterwork.
