These two serenades are often paired, as Suk was Dvorak's student. The happy accident is that Suk shows up his famous teacher with an overwhelmingly gorgeous, often melancholy lyrical invention. Written in 1892, Suk's Serenade for Strings in E Flat Major is perhaps his most favored work. The tender Dvorak serenade shows a debt to Schubert. The lovely waltz movement is played with perfect lilt by the Hungarian Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra.
