Tamyra Grey came into the American public's consciousness as the svelte singer with the elastic voice who was controversially voted off the first season of American Idol. But the outcry -- and outrage in some quarters -- didn't harm her career; she was signed to Idol creator Simon Cowell's label by the end of the year.
