It's difficult to judge the maturation of Thompson's career since he debuted with such world-weary old-soul in the first place, but his fourth LP steps with a more sophisticated gate than those of his straight-forward younger days. When a tune like "What's This?!!" lurches along with dramatic motion and dark innuendo it shows the influence of his tenure as Rufus Wainwright's sideman. There are many brilliant insights here, though none funnier than the dour "Turning the Gun on Myself."
