When the Brummels released Volume 2 in late '65, the Byrds and Lovin' Spoonful had already eclipsed them as folk-rock pop stars. But that didn't stop the band from producing a sophomore LP whose moody jangle and melancholic vibes predated the early San Francisco sounds of the Jefferson Airplane and Grateful Dead. Although Brummels guitarist Ron Elliott has dismissed Volume 2 as "unfinished," there's no denying the heart-breaking beauty of ballads like "You Tell Me Why" and "I Want You."
