The bottom-heavy thump of a drum machine provides the tempo as gritty guitar winds through song patterns. Bass waves straddle the sonic fence, separating the lower register of the guitar from the huge kick drum sound. Repetition of notes causes a drone of sorts that lulls one into a deeper-than-usual thought process. Much too dark to be Shoegazer, and much too jangly to be Goth, the genius of the Hot Monkey is their ability to end the repetition of the song just short of listener boredom.
